Growing Bioenergy Knowledge
Introducing young people to bioenergy in the classroom generates interest in renewable energy developments in their local communities. In addition, bioenergy education increases student knowledge of, appreciation for and career interest in bioenergy opportunities.
In collaboration with Oregon State University’s SMILE (Science & Math Investigative Learning Experience) program, we are developing and delivering bioenergy concepts to teachers and K-12 students. The SMILE program provides science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education to underrepresented and educationally underserved youths in rural communities. SMILE encourages students enroll in college and pursue a degree in a STEM field.
SMILE programs provide K-12 students and their teachers educational opportunities through interactive science and math enrichment programs and teacher training events. Teachers working with students in SMILE’s inventive after-school clubs are able to engage students in problem-based learning allowing them to apply their skills and knowledge in the context of bioenergy. SMILE also offers a residential Summer Bridge-to-College program providing bioenergy educational enrichment and college skills to incoming college freshmen from rural communities and underrepresented groups.
