Sustainability Overview

Production of biofuels and biochemicals from poplar trees must be environmentally, economically, and socially sustainable from start to finish. The AHB Sustainability team is assessing impacts on the carbon cycle, wildlife, soil, water, and people and researching approaches so that businesses have the information they need to make sustainable choices. The team is also comparing climate and greenhouse gas impacts between poplar-based and petroleum-based fuels and biochemicals.

Sustainability Progress

The AHB Sustainability team has completed a full life cycle assessment (LCA) of poplar-derived jet fuels and is expanding the LCA to include other biochemicals. The team is monitoring the demonstration sites for changes in soil, water, and wildlife. Economic models are being used to identify optimal locations for poplar bioenergy farms and biorefineries.
