Poplar for Biofuels in the Rathdrum-Spokane Valley: Workshop and 4th Annual Bioenergy Field Tour

Join us to explore the potential for a poplar-based biofuels industry in the Rathdrum-Spokane Valley. We will discuss growing poplar trees as a bioenergy crop and opportunities for biofuel and bioproduct developments in the Rathdrum-Spokane Valley. After lunch, we will tour the Reuse Farm at the Hayden Area Regional Sewer Board facility, including AHB’s 65-acre “Poplar for Biofuels” Demonstration Site.

Topics include:

  • Growing poplar as a wastewater management tool
  • Best areas to produce biofuels and bioproducts
  • Economic potential of a biofuel industry in the Rathdrum-Spokane Valley
  • Research results from AHB, including economic case study findings
  • Alternative uses and alternative markets for poplar in the Pacific Northwest
  • Biomass production tour highlighting operational and research poplar plots

  • Starr Sullivan & Tom Platt – Missoula Montana Wastewater Division – “Missoula Hybrid Poplar Water Reclamation Project”
  • Jason Selwitz – Agriculture Center of Excellence, Walla Walla Community College – “Technical Training in Biomass, Bioenergy, and Wastewater Treatment Plant Operations”
  • Nora Haider – Washington State University – “Advanced Hardwood Biofuels Northwest and the Growing Bioeconomy”

Advanced Hardwood Biofuels Northwest (AHB) is a program funded by the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA). AHB integrates research, education, and extension to develop poplar-based biofuel and biochemical industries in the Pacific Northwest (PNW).
